What is substrate?
A substrate is the base material that carries or supports the structures built on it. In semiconductor packaging the term covers lead frames, laminate and ceramic carriers, PCBs and silicon wafers, all of which are routinely plasma treated before wire bonding, die attach or molding. Because the substrate is the surface an adhesive or bond must hold to, its cleanliness usually determines whether the joint above it survives.
