What is ultraviolet (uv) radiation?

Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic energy with wavelengths shorter than visible light, roughly 10 to 400 nanometres. A plasma emits it continuously as excited species relax to lower energy states, and that emission does useful work: UV photons carry enough energy to break carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds, contributing to the breakdown of organic contamination alongside the chemical and physical mechanisms of the process.
